What is the Best Method for Storing Toffee and Extending the Shelf Life?

Many of our customers wonder, what is the best way to store their toffee?  Like a fine wine, the temperature and humidity have a big impact on how your toffee will taste over time.

Preserving the Perfect Crunch: How to Store English Toffee

English toffee, with its delicate balance of sweet, salty, and crunchy, is a treat to be savored. To ensure it stays fresh and delicious, proper storage is key. Here's a guide to help you keep your toffee at its best.

Understanding the Enemy: Moisture

Toffee's biggest enemy is moisture. Exposure to humidity can soften its crisp texture and dull its flavor. Therefore, the goal is to keep it as dry as possible.

  • Optimal Storage Conditions:

    • Airtight Container:

      • Glass Jar: A glass jar with a tight-fitting lid is ideal. It provides a barrier against moisture and light, both of which can degrade the toffee.

      • Metal Tin: A metal tin can also work well, especially if it has a good seal.

    • Cool, Dry Place:

      • Pantry: A cool, dry pantry is a good choice for short-term storage.

      • Refrigerator: For longer-term storage or in humid climates, refrigeration can help maintain the toffee's crispness. However, be aware that refrigeration can sometimes affect the texture, making it slightly harder.

    • Avoid Extreme Temperatures:

      • Heat: High temperatures can soften the toffee and accelerate its deterioration.

    • Additional Tips:

      • Portioning: If you plan to store the toffee for an extended period, consider portioning it into smaller bags or containers. This reduces the risk of moisture exposure and makes it easier to enjoy without compromising the entire batch.

      • Check Regularly: Periodically inspect the toffee for any signs of moisture or staleness. If you notice any changes, it's best to consume it sooner rather than later.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy your English toffee for weeks, even months. Remember, the key is to keep it dry, cool, and away from direct sunlight.

To sum up, there are a few approaches to storing toffee:

  • Leave it on the counter.  In this case the toffee will disappear within a few days as you and your family enjoy eating it!

  • Store in in a cool dry place like your pantry.  If you want to keep your toffee around for a while, regulating the temperature and humidity will extend the shelf life.  Your panty or other cabinet will keep the temperature and humidity constant.  Because Seal Beach Toffee is made in small batches with high quality ingredients, the toffee will remain fresh for 4-6 weeks in the pantry.

  • Refrigerating your toffee will extend the shelf life further.  The cooler temperature and regulated humidity reduce the oxidation that is responsible for toffee losing its freshness.  In most refrigerators toffee will last 3-6 months.  You might find that the cool temperature brings out the flavor even more.  Tip: before storing your Seal Beach toffee in the refrigerator seal it in a zip lock bag or other airtight container.  This will extend the freshness longer as well as keep out any strong smells that may be in your refrigerator.

  • Freezing the toffee will provide the maximum shelf life.  Most residential freezers are "frost free" which further reduces the humidity.  In the freezer the toffee will last 6-12 months.  Utilizing a zip lock or airtight container will improve freshness as well.

Regardless of how you store it, Ron's Original Premium English Toffee is a special treat.
